[Opinion] A Hot Trend of Home Food

내가왕이될상인가s island - naegawang-idoelsang-ingas island

Food for the body is not enough.

There must be food for the soul.” - Dorothy Day

As a matter of fact, food sustains our bodies, and is thus called the body’s battery. Besides this down-to-earth point of view, there has also been a culinary point of view about food.

TV cooking or culinary programs are hitting high of the ratings charts, sweeping people off their feet. Young, good-looking chefs with remarkable backgrounds are frequent guests on such programs. Some of them even have their own cooking shows. There have also been food dramas and films. To the delight of viewers, a KBS TV director with a culinary arts diploma from Le Cordon Bleu, a prestigious French culinary school, introduces foods of the world in a culinary program every weekend.

Amid this sweeping trend, programs on no-frills meals are also taking the country by storm. Aside from the mundane axiom “we eat to live,” many people are missing the pleasure of having meals with those you love.

Jipbap” (home food) is now all the rage. It implies missing the taste of mom’s cooking, as well as sharing food with the people you care about. Reality shows, like the cable TV channel tvN’s Three Meals a Day삼시세끼, feature celebs cooking three meals every day. While staying in a remote village or on a remote island, they cook meals using vegetables grown in a nearby garden or fish they caught from the sea.

These programs seem to help people vicariously satisfy their yearning for home food and remember its delight. They reflect the reality in which many people have no time to cook or have dinner with their family, as they frequently eat out or make do with fast food. According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare보건복지부, just 64 percent of people ate dinner at home with their family more than twice a week in 2013, down 12 percentage points from 76 percent in 2005.

All this is nothing but a reminder that all the luxury and convenience in our everyday lives aside, eating home food is becoming a precious practice when many people miss the delight of mom’s cooking. We are not just eating to live, are we?

[Places] Lhasa, Tibet

내가왕이될상인가s island - naegawang-idoelsang-ingas island

Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet and one of the highest cities in the world, sits at an altitude of 3,490 meters, which is 14 times as high as Korea’s 63 Building. It has a population of about 559,000. Because of its location, Lhasa’s climate is cool, dry and frosty, but it receives much sunlight.

By far the most popular tourist attraction in Lhasa is Potala Palace. Built in 1645 by the 5th Dalai Lama, it has several buildings and contains over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines, and 200,000 statues. The White Palace area served as the living quarters for the Dalai Lama. The Red Palace area is devoted to religious study and Buddhist prayer.

For Tibetans, the Jokhang is the most sacred temple in Tibet. Jokhang means “House of the Buddha.” It was constructed in 642 by King Songsten. For centuries, the temple has been a key site for Buddhist pilgrimage, with Buddhists coming from all over to pray and pay their respects. Also, there are many beautiful and grand places, like Longwang Lake, Yaowang Mountain of Lhasa, Xianzu Island, and so on.
