See this movie!

This is one of the best movies I have ever watched. I cry every time I even think about this movie. Even if you don't really like drama, this movie is well worth watching. It will make you rethink everything about yourself and about your life. See this movie with someone you love, even if at the time you are at odds with one another.

Needed more girls, less bros

It was ok. But spent way too much time on the bros and not the sweet beautiful girls across the street. But Jennifer Connely knows how to act!

An early Joaquin Phoenix film I just never got around to seeing, and it did not disappoint. A beautiful 1950's era film with all the exquisite little details. My one complaint is the narrator's voice sounded so much like Billy Crudup (who plays Phoenix's brother) that it took many baffled moments to realize it was supposed to be Phoenix all grown up. There is nothing quite so distinctive as Joaquin Phoenix's voice so why they did not just let him do the narration is beyond me. Yes, he was still very young and might have erred on the side of youthful interpretation but nothing could be as bad as the completely wrong voiceover they used. But don't let that stop you from viewing. It is a very lovely film and so sweet to see these blockbuster actors as "babies." If you are a romantic, check this out!

As far as old movies go

It was OK by me. The never ending tale of "he cheats, she cheats, families against each other"

As far as a review of the movie itself i give it 3 stars. The acting from all the actors was very good. The plot of the movie was weak, i think the actors made it better than the script!

stupid movie

I don't know what went wrong but they really didn't develop Jacey's story so that the title and presumably the premise of this movie fit. It was supposed to be about this kid who felt sorry for himself . . . a confused kid . . . wishing he was on the "right" side of the tracks. He was envious of this rich family that had 3 girls. So he did what the rich family's dad said . . . he tried to sleep his way there. He actually slept with all 3 girls. But like I said this was a half baked idea of whoever created this movie. It just turned out to be another modern story that tried to tarnish the image of the 50s. It showed a promiscuous guy (JaceY) and promiscuous girls (the Abbott girls). That was pretty much the story. I seriously doubt any girls in the 1950s would tell their dad that they just slept with a guy (but not the word she used) while standing there with the guy while grabbing him between the legs. That just didn't happen. While it could happen today it would still be rare and only in certain families. But this is the kinda of stuff this movie was about. It just turned out to be a situation of a loser dad (Jacey's dad) who squandered his life and failed to capitalize on his talent for his or his family's sake. So his eldest kid picked up where his dad left off. So the kid grows up thinking the Abbots took advantage of his dad and at the same envying them. There is a sweet character in this movie and that was Phoenix's character. He was realistically portrayed as a guy of the 50s or even today I think. Also the plot around the town rumor around the mom and the Abbott guy was half baked also. So all this turned out to be in my eyes was a movie showing a sleazy kid acting recklessly on his hormones with sleazy girls. I don't call this entertainment.

A great movie

I started watching this film on TV, but had to end it early. I immediately came to Amazon to get the video, because it was so interesting.
I wasn't disappointed with the later part of the story and I found the ending perfectly to my liking. Gonna watch it again soon.
I don't remember having seen Liv Tyler in other films (though I recalled somewhat having seen her in her father's music video a long time
ago). Anyway I was charmed by her sweetness and her acting. Won't say anything about the plot, so you'll have to see it. However, if you like
a complex story with lots of twists and turns and are in the least romantically inclined, you'll love this film. Joaquin Phoenix does a great job
too (he always does). Don't miss this.

Love story

Verified purchase

It is two stories in one movie. The older brother blames Mr Abbott for all his families problems and status in the town, and younger brother is in love with youngest Abbott daughter. The older brother get back at the Abbott's by having sexs with all the daughters; which caused a falling out with the younger brother. The brother's mother dying brings the brothers back together again, and the younger brother learns to forgive and marries the youngest Abbott daughter.
